Chris Pratt Opens Up About Regrettable Early Career Choices
Long before he soared to fame as the charismatic Star-Lord, Chris Pratt was navigating the challenging landscape of Hollywood with roles that now give him pause. The beloved actor recently shared candid reflections on his early career days, admitting that many of the characters he portrayed were problematic and regrettable.
The 'D--khead Boyfriend' Archetype
In a revealing interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pratt delved into how he was frequently typecast as the "d--khead boyfriend" in numerous projects. He specifically recalled his role in the 2009 romantic comedy Bride Wars, where he played Fletcher, the controlling longtime boyfriend of Anne Hathaway's character.
"This is the role that I often was offered from early in my career up until this point," Pratt explained. "Which is the guy you don't want to end up with the girl, and kind of the douche character." He added that he had "dined out on 'd--khead boyfriend' for a long time," highlighting how this archetype became a recurring theme in his early work.
A Pattern of Problematic Portrayals
Pratt's history with these roles extends beyond Bride Wars. His filmography includes several other projects where he played similarly unlikable male characters:
- 2008's Wanted - Pratt appeared as another problematic figure in this action thriller.
- 2010's 10 Years - He continued this trend in the ensemble comedy-drama.
- 2011's Take Me Home Tonight - Another instance of the typecast role.
- 2011's What's Your Number? - Notably starring his ex-wife Anna Faris.
Even in his television work, Pratt's character Bright Abbott on the series Everwood (2002-2006) occasionally exhibited similar traits, demonstrating how this pattern persisted across different mediums.
The Turning Point: From Typecast to Blockbuster Star
As his role on Parks and Recreation was concluding, Pratt experienced a career-defining shift. His casting as Star-Lord in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy marked a dramatic departure from his previous roles. This breakthrough was followed by his starring role in 2015's Jurassic World, solidifying his status as a bona fide blockbuster film star.
These successful projects proved his versatility beyond the "toxic male character" archetype, allowing him to showcase his range as an actor capable of carrying major franchise films.
Looking Forward: New Horizons in Animation
Currently, Chris Pratt is preparing for his next major project: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the highly anticipated sequel to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This venture into animated features represents another dimension of his evolving career, further distancing him from the early roles he now views with regret.
Pratt's reflections offer a fascinating glimpse into the challenges actors face with typecasting in Hollywood and the journey toward more meaningful, diverse roles that better represent their talents and values.
