Viral Video Shows Toddler Beaten at Navi Mumbai Anganwadi; Probe Finds Mother Behind Assault
A disturbing viral video from Maharashtra's Panvel has sparked outrage after a woman was seen repeatedly kicking and assaulting a young girl at a local anganwadi centre. The incident took place in Nandgaon village under Panvel taluka, Navi Mumbai. According to police, the child was refusing to sit quietly inside the anganwadi, and, frustrated by her restlessness, the child's mother lost her temper and beat her. The police investigation confirmed that the mother was the assailant, not a staff member as initially suspected.
Details of the Incident
The video, shared on social media by Deccan Herald, shows the woman kicking the toddler multiple times while other children are present. The anganwadi is a government-run childcare centre under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. Police officials stated that the mother had brought her daughter to the centre but became agitated when the child would not sit still. The assault occurred in full view of other children and staff, but no immediate intervention was reported.
Police Response and Action
After the video went viral, local police launched an investigation. Senior Inspector Sanjay Patil of Panvel police station said, "We reviewed CCTV footage and identified the woman as the child's mother. She admitted to the assault, citing frustration over the child's behavior. We have registered a case under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code." The mother has been arrested and is in custody. The child was examined by a doctor and is reported to be in stable condition, with no major injuries.
Community and Official Reactions
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation. Local activists demanded stricter oversight of anganwadi centres. A child rights activist commented, "This is a shocking breach of trust. Anganwadis are supposed to be safe spaces for children. The mother's actions are inexcusable, but the lack of intervention by staff also raises questions." The state Women and Child Development Department has ordered an inquiry into the incident and promised action against any negligence. Officials have also announced counseling for the family.
Background on Anganwadi Centres
Anganwadi centres are part of India's ICDS scheme, providing nutrition, preschool education, and health services to children under six. There are over 1.3 million anganwadi centres nationwide. This incident has reignited debate about safety and monitoring in these facilities. Local authorities have been directed to install CCTV cameras in all anganwadis in Panvel taluka and conduct surprise inspections.
