Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar Achieves Global Streaming Dominance on Netflix
Ranveer Singh's latest cinematic venture, the espionage thriller Dhurandhar, has spectacularly ascended to the pinnacle of Netflix's global rankings for non-English films. According to the streaming giant's official Tudum weekly data for the period spanning January 26 to February 1, the film amassed an impressive 7.6 million views worldwide, securing the coveted number one position on the platform's international charts.
Unprecedented Success Across South Asian Markets
The film's triumph is particularly pronounced across South Asia, where it has resonated deeply with audiences. Dhurandhar not only dominated viewership in its home country of India but also achieved the remarkable feat of topping Netflix's Top 10 Movies list in Pakistan. This outcome has generated significant attention and discussion, given the film's politically charged narrative and the longstanding absence of Indian theatrical releases in Pakistan due to reciprocal bans.
Streaming since January 30, Dhurandhar arrives on Netflix following a monumental theatrical run that saw it gross over ₹1,300 crore at the box office, firmly establishing it as one of the most commercially successful Hindi films of the year.
Geopolitical Narrative Fuels Global Conversation
Directed by Aditya Dhar and largely set in Lyari, Karachi—a neighborhood historically linked with gang violence—the film crafts a high-stakes narrative centered on covert intelligence operations. It intricately weaves in references to real-world events such as the Kandahar hijacking, the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
This geopolitical backdrop has ignited vigorous online debates among viewers, who are actively discussing the film's realism, the powerful performances by the cast, and its underlying political messaging. The storyline's sensitive themes have undoubtedly contributed to its viral status and cross-border appeal.
Streaming Platforms Bridge Cultural Divides
The film's performance in Pakistan highlights a significant shift in how Indian content reaches international audiences. With Indian films largely barred from Pakistani cinemas for several years, streaming services like Netflix have emerged as primary conduits for cultural exchange. This digital avenue allows Pakistani viewers unprecedented access to major Indian productions, as noted in reports by industry publications like Variety.
Beyond India and Pakistan, Dhurandhar has demonstrated robust viewership across the broader South Asian region, including strong performances in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Interestingly, despite reports suggesting the film faced restrictions in some Gulf nations due to its perceived narrative stance, it has trended powerfully across the Middle East.
Netflix's data confirms it ranked number one in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman, while also securing a spot in the Top 10 in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Star-Studded Cast and Upcoming Sequel
The film features an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors, including Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, and Sara Arjun, whose performances have been widely praised.
The excitement surrounding Dhurandhar is set to continue with the announcement of a sequel. Titled Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the follow-up film is scheduled for a multi-language theatrical release on March 19, in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. The sequel will further explore the arc of Ranveer Singh's character, Jaskirat Singh Rangi, also known as Hamza Ali Mazari, tracing his transformation from a spy to a feared gangster while delving deeper into his complex past.
Dhurandhar is produced by Aditya Dhar and Lokesh Dhar under B62 Studios, in collaboration with Jio Studios, led by Jyoti Deshpande. The film's dual success—both in theaters and on streaming—underscores its broad appeal and cultural impact, marking a significant milestone in contemporary Indian cinema's global reach.
