Kate Hudson Gained 15 Pounds for 'Song Sung Blue' Role, Shares On-Set Chemistry with Hugh Jackman
Kate Hudson gained 15 pounds for musical film role

In a refreshing departure from typical Hollywood transformations, actor Kate Hudson has revealed she intentionally put on weight to prepare for her latest role. The actress shared details about her preparation for the musical film 'Song Sung Blue', which includes gaining 15 pounds and taking a break from her usual fitness and skincare regimen.

Embracing a Softer Look for the Character

Speaking to People magazine, the 46-year-old actress explained her unconventional approach to getting into character. "This film was fun. I didn't have to watch what I ate," Hudson said. She deliberately gained 15 pounds to achieve a "nice and soft" appearance for her portrayal of Claire Sardina.

Hudson timed this physical change perfectly, aligning it with the holiday season. "It was over the holiday season, so it was perfect. I wasn't working out much," she admitted. The actress embraced this period of relaxation, stating she let herself "be and enjoyed life," while also acknowledging she enjoys her disciplined phases.

On-Set Chemistry with Hugh Jackman

In the film, Hudson stars opposite 57-year-old Hugh Jackman. The movie, based on a 2008 documentary of the same name, follows the real-life romance and musical journey of a Milwaukee-based Neil Diamond tribute act called Lightning & Thunder.

The duo's chemistry was a highlight of the production. Hudson praised Jackman's ability to connect, calling it his "superpower." Jackman reciprocated the admiration, noting that working with Hudson made him "a better actor" and applauded her balance of preparation and instinct.

Bonding Through Music Before Filming

An interesting aspect of their preparation involved recording music together before any filming began. Hudson revealed they sat on a sofa with two microphones for their first session, unsure of how their dynamic would work. "We didn't really know each other," she recalled.

Jackman, who admitted to being more nervous in a recording studio than on stage, observed that Hudson seemed very much at home. Reflecting on these sessions in an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hudson explained this process was a great way for them to build a rapport before portraying an intimate married couple on screen.

The film, which had its premiere on Christmas Day, delves into the band's early days and the relationship between Claire and Mike Sardina, offering audiences a blend of music and heartfelt storytelling.
