The Kerala Story 2 Secures U/A Certificate, Ignites Political Firestorm
The recently unveiled trailer for the upcoming film 'The Kerala Story 2' has generated a wave of mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike. Adding to the discourse, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the movie a U/A certificate, permitting viewers aged 14 and above to watch it upon its theatrical release.
Unusual Certification for Sensitive Subject Matter
Typically, cinematic works dealing with provocative or sensitive themes, such as those explored in 'The Kerala Story 2', are assigned an 'A' (Adults Only) certificate. This stricter rating limits viewership to individuals aged 18 and older. The decision by the CBFC to award a more lenient U/A rating has therefore raised eyebrows within industry circles. The filmmaking team, however, has expressed profound satisfaction with this outcome.
Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah shared his gratitude with Hindustan Times, stating, "I am truly grateful to the Censor Board for granting a UA certificate to our film. It reflects their faith in the intent and integrity with which we have told this story. This decision is especially important because it allows us to reach young girls and families across the country."
Film Draws Inspiration from Documented Real-Life Events
'The Kerala Story 2', directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, is inspired by true incidents documented within India's legal framework. The narrative centers on the harrowing experiences of young women ensnared in alleged forced conversion rackets. By drawing from these real-world cases, the filmmakers aim to shed light on a contentious social issue.
Political Condemnation and Accusations of Propaganda
The film's portrayal of religious conversions has ignited significant political controversy. Many viewers and critics argue that the movie exaggerates certain events, distorting reality for dramatic effect. This criticism culminated in a strong rebuke from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, CM Vijayan denounced the film, labeling it as "poisonous propaganda." He asserted, "We must collectively reject attempts to portray Kerala, a land of religious harmony that stands at the forefront of sustainable development and is a model in maintaining law and order, as a center of terrorism. It is the responsibility of each of us to ensure that Kerala's secular foundation is not undermined by false propaganda and to reject it by upholding the values of secularism and brotherhood."
Producer Defends Film's Core Mission of Awareness
In response to the mounting political criticism, Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah has staunchly defended the film's fundamental purpose. He emphasizes that the project's primary objective is to foster awareness and empowerment, not to propagate divisive narratives.
Shah elaborated, "Our objective has always been awareness, to inform, and to empower young minds to stay alert and make informed choices. I sincerely thank the Board (CBFC) for their fair and thoughtful consideration in enabling this message to reach the next generation."
Official Release Date Confirmed
Amidst the swirling debates and certification discussions, the release date for 'The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond' has been officially locked. The film is scheduled to premiere in theatres nationwide on February 27, 2026. As the date approaches, the conversation surrounding its content, certification, and societal impact is expected to intensify further.
