Rescue Operation Underway After Plant Collapse
A joint team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), municipal administration, police, and medical personnel is working on a war footing to rescue individuals trapped under the debris of a waste-to-energy plant that collapsed in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Nine people have been rescued so far, while efforts continue to locate 10 more who remain trapped.
Details of the Incident
The collapse occurred at a waste-to-energy facility in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, a major industrial and residential hub near Pune. According to officials, the structure gave way unexpectedly, trapping workers inside. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but initial reports suggest possible structural failure.
Rescue teams have been deployed with heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to clear debris and locate survivors. The operation is being coordinated by the district administration, with senior officials monitoring the progress.
Government and Official Response
Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad stated, "All possible efforts are underway to reach every trapped individual as quickly as possible and ensure their safe rescue. We have mobilized all available resources." The NDRF has deployed two teams, while the SDRF and local police are assisting in the operation.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed concern over the incident and directed officials to expedite rescue efforts. He also announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased, if any, and free medical treatment for the injured.
Impact and Safety Concerns
The collapse has raised questions about the safety standards of waste-to-energy plants in the region. Local residents reported hearing a loud noise before the structure gave way. The plant, which processed municipal solid waste to generate electricity, had been operational for a few years.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and whether any safety protocols were violated. The incident underscores the need for strict enforcement of building codes and regular inspections of industrial facilities.
