The annual Amarnath Yatra has witnessed a significant surge in pilgrim numbers during its initial phase, with official data revealing a 28 percent increase compared to the previous year. According to figures released by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, a total of 1,11,975 pilgrims had paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine in the first six days of the 2025 Yatra, which commenced on July 3.
Record Numbers on Key Routes
The increased footfall was observed on both the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route. Officials noted that the improved weather conditions and enhanced infrastructure facilities contributed to the higher turnout. The pilgrimage, which is scheduled to continue for 52 days, has seen enthusiastic participation from devotees across the country.
“The arrangements have been streamlined to handle the larger crowd, with additional langar (community kitchen) facilities and medical camps set up along the routes,” a spokesperson for the Shrine Board stated. The board had anticipated a higher number of registrations this year, and the initial figures confirm the trend.
Security and Logistics
The Jammu and Kashmir administration, in coordination with security forces, has deployed additional personnel to ensure the safety of pilgrims. Helicopter services have been operating at full capacity to manage emergency evacuations and provide aerial support. The yatra, which holds immense religious significance for Hindus, is being closely monitored to prevent any untoward incidents.
Last year, the yatra saw a total of 4.5 lakh pilgrims over its duration. With the current pace, authorities project that the 2025 yatra could surpass the 5 lakh mark. The increase in numbers reflects the growing popularity of the pilgrimage and the effective management by the administration.
