Konkona Sensharma Addresses Systemic Issues in Bollywood

Actor and filmmaker Konkona Sensharma has consistently voiced her concerns about the film industry's deep-rooted problems. In a recent candid interview, she opened up about the persistent gender pay gap and explained why she considers herself fortunate to have avoided the worst effects of Bollywood's entrenched patriarchal system.

Privilege and Position in the Industry

During her conversation with News18, Sensharma acknowledged that many women in Bollywood face silencing or sidelining when they speak out. However, she highlighted her unique circumstances. "I'm in a unique position of privilege," she stated. "I've been an actor for so many years. I'm relatively well-known, so I may not be so easily dismissed. Education also plays a role here."

She further elaborated on how her background, particularly her mother, veteran filmmaker Aparna Sen, has contributed to this privilege. "I have a lot of privilege in this particular situation," Sensharma added. "So, mine may not be the most common experience. But there are women who've suffered because of patriarchy, and so have men. They aren't able to find a voice or even an opportunity, unfortunately."

Progress and Persistent Gender Gaps

Sensharma pointed out that while some improvements have occurred over the years, such as women now being permitted to work as makeup artists on film sets—a role previously reserved for men—progress in other technical departments remains disappointingly slow. "Equal opportunity is a big one, along with the gender pay gap that exists," she emphasized.

She recalled, "In earlier films, even till seven-eight years back, only men were allowed to be makeup artists, and women were allowed to be hairdressers. But that has changed, which is a wonderful thing." Despite this positive shift, she stressed that broader equality in roles and compensation is still lacking.

Current Projects and Recent Work

Konkona Sensharma is currently directing a web series titled 'Welcome to Khoya Mahal', featuring actors Aditi Rao Hydari and Barun Sobti. The series is anticipated to premiere on a streaming platform by late 2026 or early 2027.

Her most recent acting appearance was in the film 'Accused', which debuted on an OTT platform on February 27 of this year. Sensharma continues to balance her roles as an actor and filmmaker, using her platform to advocate for change in the industry.

Her insights shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by many in Bollywood, while also highlighting the incremental progress being made toward greater gender equality and opportunity behind the scenes.
