Legal Notice Sent to Makers of 'Ghooskhor Pandat' Over Title Controversy
The teaser for Manoj Bajpayee's upcoming film 'Ghooskhor Pandat' was recently unveiled at an event, but the movie has quickly become a subject of intense discussion for reasons beyond its content. Netizens have strongly criticized the filmmakers for using the word 'Pandat' in the title, which references a specific caste and associates it with corruption. This backlash has now escalated into formal legal action, with a notice sent to the production house.
Legal Notice Demands Immediate Title Removal
According to reports from India Today, a Mumbai-based advocate has issued a legal notice to Netflix and the director of 'Ghooskhor Pandat'. Advocate Ashutosh Dubey has demanded the immediate removal of the title, labeling it as 'defamatory, community-vilifying, unconstitutional, and socially incendiary.' The notice argues that the title is inherently offensive and objectionable because it links the respected Pandit community, known for its intellectual identity, with corruption and bribery.
The legal document further contends that such usage unfairly associates an identifiable community with 'criminality and moral depravity,' potentially harming their reputation and social standing.
Petition Filed in Delhi High Court to Halt Release
In addition to the legal notice, a petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to stay the release of the film on the streaming platform. As per NDTV reports, advocate Vineet Jindal has submitted the petition, claiming that the title 'Ghooskhor Pandat' is defamatory as it 'deliberately associates a well-recognized religious and social designation with corruption and bribery, thereby maligning and lowering the reputation of an entire community in the eyes of the public.'
The petition alleges that the makers have violated Articles 14, 21, and 25 of the Indian Constitution by selectively targeting a particular religious community through the title. This legal move underscores the growing sensitivity around caste-based portrayals in media and entertainment.
Details About 'Ghooskhor Pandat' and Cast
The teaser for 'Ghooskhor Pandat' introduces Manoj Bajpayee's character as senior inspector Ajay Dixit of the Delhi Police, who is infamously known by the nickname 'Pandat.' Directed by Ritesh Shah, the film features a star-studded cast including:
- Manoj Bajpayee
- Nushrratt Bharuccha
- Saqib Saleem
- Akshay Oberoi
- Shraddha Das
- Divya Dutta
- Kiku Sharda
Despite the controversy, the makers have not yet announced an official release date for the film. Meanwhile, neither Netflix nor the producers have issued a formal response to the legal notices and public outcry, leaving the future of the project uncertain amid the ongoing debate.
This incident highlights the delicate balance between creative expression and social responsibility in Indian cinema, as filmmakers navigate the complexities of caste and community representation in their work.
