Amidst swirling industry whispers about actor Akshaye Khanna being a challenging collaborator, veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan has come forward with a staunch defence. This comes as Khanna earns widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Rehman Dakait in the blockbuster film 'Dhurandhar', directed by Aditya Dhar.
Director's Candid Praise for the Actor
In a recent interview, Priyadarshan directly addressed the long-standing rumours about Akshaye Khanna's temperament. He revealed that even during their first collaboration, the 1998 film 'Doli Saja Ke Rakhna', many in the industry advised him against casting the actor. "Everybody had discouraged me from signing him on. They said he is difficult and moody," Priyadarshan recalled.
However, the director's personal experience was starkly different. He stated that he found Khanna to be thoroughly professional and cooperative from the very beginning. "I fell in love with him from the first film itself. I never found him difficult," Priyadarshan emphasised.
A Professional and Punctual Partner
Elaborating on their working relationship, Priyadarshan shared specific examples of Khanna's dedication. "If I called him at 5am, he would be there on time," he said, highlighting the actor's commitment. The duo went on to work together in multiple successful films including 'Hulchul' and 'Hungama'.
Priyadarshan summarised their bond warmly, calling Khanna "a darling" and noting that they never shared a bitter moment across all their projects. He also added that the actor remains "least bothered by criticism," a trait the director admires.
Controversy and Current Projects
This defence arrives against the backdrop of recent reports concerning Akshaye Khanna's exit from the upcoming 'Drishyam 3'. Reports suggested a disagreement over remuneration led to his departure, a move that prompted the film's producer, Kumar Mangat Pathak, to announce potential legal action. Pathak claimed the actor left just a day before the release of 'Dhurandhar'.
Meanwhile, Khanna's current project, 'Dhurandhar', has become a monumental success. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film was released in theatres on December 5, 2025, and has reportedly grossed over Rs 1200 crore at the global box office. Fans can look forward to the next part, which is slated to arrive in cinemas on March 19, 2026.
Priyadarshan's testimonial offers a compelling counter-narrative to the often one-dimensional portrayal of actors in Bollywood, reminding audiences and the industry alike that professional relationships are complex and deeply personal.
