Rajkumar Hirani, the director of the beloved 2009 film 3 Idiots, has provided an update on its long-awaited sequel. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Hirani disclosed that he and writer Abhijat Joshi are still developing the script, which will depict the lives of the main characters—Rancho, Farhan, and Raju—two decades after the original story.
What to Expect from the Sequel
Hirani confirmed that the sequel will not revolve around college life. Instead, it will focus on the characters' current situations. "It's primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later. It's not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?" he explained.
The original 3 Idiots was a satirical comedy-drama that critiqued India's education system and encouraged following one's passion. Its iconic dialogue, "All is well," became a cultural phenomenon. When asked if the sequel would carry a similar message, Hirani laughed and said, "Of course. A big one!"
Original Cast Expected to Return
The sequel is anticipated to bring back the original cast, including Aamir Khan as Rancho, R Madhavan as Farhan, Sharman Joshi as Raju, and Kareena Kapoor Khan as Pia. However, it remains unclear whether other beloved characters—such as Omi Vaidya's Chatur, Boman Irani's Viru Sahastrabuddhe, Mona Singh's Mona, and Javed Jaffrey's Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad—will reprise their roles.
