Details of the Incident
The boy, whose identity has been withheld, was a Class 12 student preparing for the NEET exam. According to police, he cut the pigeon net from the window and jumped from his flat on the 10th floor of a residential building in the Adajan area. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to severe internal injuries.
Police Investigation
Police officials stated that the family was unaware of any stress or pressure the boy might have been facing. No suicide note was found at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the boy might have been under academic pressure related to the NEET exam, but no concrete evidence has been found yet. The police are recording statements from family members and friends to ascertain the reason behind the extreme step.
Rising Cases of Student Suicides
This incident adds to the growing concern over student suicides in India, particularly among medical aspirants. The competitive nature of exams like NEET often leads to immense stress among students. Experts emphasize the need for mental health support and counseling for students preparing for high-stakes exams.
Authorities have urged parents and teachers to remain vigilant and provide emotional support to students. Helplines and counseling services are available for those in distress.
The NEET exam is one of the most competitive medical entrance exams in India, with over 1.5 million candidates appearing annually. The pressure to secure a seat in a medical college often takes a toll on students' mental health.
