Billava Brigade Plans Statue of Freedom Fighter Ubar Manja Baidya

The Billava Brigade, established in Puttur to promote the holistic development of the Billava community, is set to commence its activities. As its inaugural major endeavor, the brigade plans to erect a statue of the esteemed freedom fighter Ubar Manja Baidya in Uppinangady.

Who Was Ubar Manja Baidya?

Manjayya Baidya of Uppinangady, popularly known as Ubar Manja Baidya, was a prominent freedom fighter from coastal Karnataka. He actively participated in the struggle against British rule and remains a revered figure in the region. A memorandum was submitted to MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, demanding the installation of the freedom fighter's statue in Uppinangady.

Role in the Freedom Movement

Brigade members highlighted that Ubar Manja Baidya was a revolutionary peasant leader who fought courageously for India's Independence. Despite being an employee of the British government, he rebelled against their unjust policies. Baidya actively participated in the 'Kalyanappana Katukai' struggle, also known as the Amara Sullia Freedom Rebellion of 1837, which occurred 20 years before the First War of Independence. He fought alongside peasant leader Kedambadi Ramayya Gowda.

Key Events and Sacrifice

According to brigade members, Baidya rebelled against the British cash-tax policy imposed on farmers. Working as a clerk at the taluk office in Uppinangady, then the British taluk headquarters, he was fluent in English. After learning about the freedom movement, he organized a movement with dozens of fighters. On April 5, 1837, Baidya and his revolutionary force lowered the British flag at Bavutagudda in Mangaluru. When the British army suppressed the revolution, Baidya was arrested. On May 27, 1837, the British publicly hanged him at Bikarnakatte in Mangaluru.

Next Steps

The brigade urged that as a first step, appropriate action must be taken to construct a statue of Baidya in Uppinangady to honor his legacy and inspire future generations.
