Supriya Pathak Champions Deepika Padukone's Call for 8-Hour Shifts in Bollywood
Veteran actor Supriya Pathak has publicly endorsed her former co-star Deepika Padukone's advocacy for implementing an eight-hour work shift within the film industry. Following similar statements from prominent figures like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Ananya Panday, Pathak's recent interview adds significant weight to this ongoing debate about working conditions in Indian cinema.
Emphasizing Preparation Time for Actors
Sharing her perspective on the evolving demands of the acting profession, Pathak focused on the critical need for actors to receive adequate time to prepare for their roles. "Acting is such a craft that if I don't work on myself, what story will I present to the audience?" she questioned during her conversation with Bollywood Bubble.
"As an actor, I am the one facing the audience. And when you face an audience, you need to be prepared. If you don't give me the time to prepare myself, how will I face them? So I think it's very important that actors, whether male or female, are given the time to prepare," Pathak elaborated, highlighting how preparation directly impacts performance quality.
Addressing Women's Unique Challenges
Pathak further illuminated the multiple personal and professional responsibilities that women frequently juggle alongside their careers. Referencing scientific studies about neurological differences, she explained, "I feel our brains are thinking about twenty things at the same time, while a man's brain often focuses on one thing. Their challenges are different, ours are different, which is why we need balance."
She concluded this thought with an empowering statement: "I believe women are empowered within themselves. Sometimes we just don't ignite that power. But if we get even a small spark, we can become a very powerful firecracker."
Confronting Persistent Pay Disparity Issues
During the comprehensive discussion, Pathak also addressed the longstanding issue of gender pay disparity within Bollywood and beyond. While acknowledging her limited knowledge about specific salary figures, she emphasized that this problem extends far beyond the Indian film industry.
"I don't know much about what others are paid, but I do believe this is not just a problem in our industry. It's a global issue. Even today, many women are fighting against it," Pathak stated.
She contextualized pay disparity within the broader conversation about women's empowerment: "Pay disparity is part of the larger conversation around women's empowerment. Across the world, in almost every profession, even if a woman is equally capable, or sometimes better, she can still face unequal pay simply because she is a woman. That struggle is still ongoing, and achieving true equality will take time."
Deepika Padukone's Industry Impact
Deepika Padukone's advocacy for eight-hour shifts has created significant division within the film industry, alongside her other professional demands. The actress, who welcomed her daughter Dua in 2024, has openly discussed how motherhood has reshaped her priorities.
Her commitment to these principles became particularly evident when she stepped down from two major film projects - the highly anticipated 'Kalki 2898AD' and 'Spirit'. Despite these departures, Padukone will continue her cinematic journey with upcoming appearances in Shah Rukh Khan's film 'King' and Atlee's sci-fi project tentatively titled 'AA22xA6'.
The entertainment industry continues to grapple with these fundamental questions about working conditions, gender equality, and artistic preparation as veteran actors like Supriya Pathak lend their voices to this crucial conversation.
