Jana Nayagan Release in Jeopardy: CBFC Delay Sparks Legal Battle, Court to Decide on Jan 9
Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan Stuck in Censor Row

The much-anticipated release of superstar Thalapathy Vijay's film, 'Jana Nayagan,' is hanging by a thread due to an unexpected delay in obtaining its censor certificate. With the movie scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, the unresolved issue has thrown its nationwide release, including in Tamil Nadu, into complete disarray, severely impacting advance bookings.

From Verbal Assurance to Sudden Silence: The Censor Timeline

The journey towards certification began smoothly on December 19 when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) screened the film. Reports indicate the screening committee suggested a few cuts and verbally assured a U/A certificate. This assurance reportedly held until December 22. The producers promptly made the required edits and resubmitted the film by December 24, expecting a swift clearance.

However, the Christmas holiday on December 25 caused a communication gap. From December 26 onwards, the production team was met with silence from the CBFC, despite repeated follow-ups. This delay is particularly critical as 'Jana Nayagan' is being promoted as Vijay's final cinematic venture before he fully commits to a political career, amplifying its significance and public anticipation.

Referral to Revising Committee Triggers Legal Action

The situation took a dramatic turn on January 5. The CBFC reportedly referred the film to its Revising Committee, citing concerns related to "religious sentiments" and the portrayal of defence forces. To add to the confusion, the Regional Censor Office directed the producers to contact its Mumbai branch.

Faced with a halted advance booking process and with international promotions already underway, the producers had no choice but to seek legal recourse. They filed an urgent petition in the Madras High Court on January 6, requesting the court to direct the CBFC to issue the certificate immediately.

Court Hearing on Release Day: A Nail-Biting Wait

Justice P.T. Asha heard the initial petition and instructed the CBFC to produce all relevant records. The matter was then taken up for a detailed hearing on January 7. According to reports from Live Law India, the arguments were intense. The CBFC defended its decision to send the film for review, while the producers' counsel questioned the timing after all mandatory cuts were complied with.

The court has reserved its order, with a decision expected to be pronounced on January 9 – the film's scheduled release date itself. The producers remain hopeful that a certificate issued by January 8 might still allow for screenings, but any further delay would jeopardize the film's release in multiplexes and single screens across the country.
