Fans of Thalapathy Vijay will have to wait a bit longer to see his hit film 'Theri' back on the big screen. The planned re-release has been officially postponed. This decision comes after several producers of forthcoming Tamil releases requested a reshuffle in the theatrical calendar. They want to avoid overcrowding at the box office.
Producer Announces Delay on Social Media
Producer Kalaippuli S Thanu made the announcement on behalf of V Creations, the official production house of 'Theri'. He posted a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. In his post, Thanu clearly stated the reason for the delay. He wrote, "As per the request from the producers of upcoming releases, we have decided to postpone the release of Theri."
The 'Theri' re-release team also circulated a formal statement. They confirmed the film would not arrive as scheduled. The team cited coordination issues with other producers and distributors. At this moment, no new release dates have been announced for the re-release of this popular Vijay-starrer.
'Jana Nayagan' Faces Legal Hurdles with CBFC
This delay adds to a growing list of postponements around Vijay's projects. His upcoming film 'Jana Nayagan' is currently stuck due to a certification halt by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The producers, KVN Productions LLP, have now taken the matter to the Supreme Court.
Producers Seek Supreme Court Intervention
KVN Productions has filed a plea in the apex court. They are seeking an ex parte interim stay on a Madras High Court order. That order had stalled the film's certification process. The plea specifically challenges a Division Bench order issued on January 9, 2026.
This Division Bench order stayed the certification of the Tamil film. It overturned an earlier, more favorable decision. A single-judge bench of the High Court had previously directed the CBFC to grant the film a U/A 16+ certificate.
In their Supreme Court plea, KVN Productions has requested an ex parte interim order. This is an order passed without hearing the other party. Alternatively, they have asked for an ad-interim stay, which is a temporary hold. The plea also requests any other relief the Supreme Court deems appropriate.
CBFC Files Caveat in the Apex Court
The Central Board of Film Certification is not sitting idle. The CBFC has also filed a caveat in the Supreme Court. A caveat is a formal notice requesting that no order be passed without hearing the concerned party. In this case, the CBFC wants to ensure its voice is heard before any decision is made regarding 'Jana Nayagan'.
Root of the 'Jana Nayagan' Controversy
The entire controversy began when the CBFC decided to hold back the certification for 'Jana Nayagan'. The board cited concerns that certain scenes in the movie could potentially hurt religious sentiments. The film's makers then approached the Madras High Court.
Initially, they received a favorable outcome. The single-judge bench directed the censor board to grant the U/A 16+ certification. However, the CBFC challenged this decision. Subsequently, a division bench of the High Court stalled the certification process once again.
Before the division bench, the CBFC sought an expert opinion. They wanted clarity on scenes in the film that depict the armed forces. 'Jana Nayagan' was originally scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, 2026. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film is being billed as Thalapathy Vijay's final cinematic project.
The dual developments surrounding 'Theri' and 'Jana Nayagan' highlight the complex challenges facing major Tamil film releases. Scheduling conflicts and certification battles are creating significant delays for one of the industry's biggest stars.
