Alka Yagnik: Slowly Finding My Way Back After Hearing Loss

Alka Yagnik Opens Up About Health Battle After Padma Bhushan Honour

Popular playback singer Alka Yagnik, who was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss in 2024, has shared that she is slowly finding her way back to normalcy after stepping away from the spotlight to address her health issues. The 60-year-old singer, known for iconic songs like Agar Tum Saath Ho and Ek Do Teen, received the Padma Bhushan from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. Seen in public after a long hiatus, she appeared frail and walked with the assistance of an attendant.

Revealing the Cause: Viral Attack Led to Hearing Loss

A day after the ceremony, Yagnik took to Instagram to share her journey. She revealed that she had suffered sensorineural nerve hearing loss caused by a viral attack two years ago. This condition involves damage to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear or the auditory nerve, which transmits sound signals to the brain. Causes can include genetics, aging, sudden loud noise exposure, and viral fevers.

Gratitude and Resilience in the Face of Adversity

In her post, Yagnik wrote, "For the last two years, I have stayed away from the spotlight, from public appearances, and from sharing much of my journey. Many of you knew I am going through difficult health and through it all, your love, prayers, messages, and unwavering support have stayed with me every step of the way." She added, "Today, as I stepped out to receive one of the highest civilian honours in the country — the distinguished Padma Bhushan, I did so with a heart full of gratitude."

A Tribute to Her Listeners and the Nation

Yagnik, one of Bollywood's most successful singers, said the honour belongs not just to her but to every listener who welcomed her voice into their lives. "While my name may be on it, it belongs just as much to every listener who welcomed my voice into their lives, carried my songs through generations, and stood by me through both the highs and the challenges." She described the moment as especially meaningful, marking not just a recognition of her work but a reminder of the strength that comes from love, hope, and resilience. "I am slowly finding my way back," she affirmed.

Thanking the President and Prime Minister

Yagnik expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the honour. She said she wanted to be present not just for herself but for everyone who had been part of her journey. "Thank you for your warmth, your kindness, your prayers, and your faith in me over the years. I carry all of it with me. Today, I didn't just accept an award — I felt the love of millions who have been a part of my journey," she concluded.
