Bombay HC Grants Preity Zinta Relief in AI Misuse Case

Actress Preity Zinta has secured significant legal relief from the Bombay High Court in her fight against the alleged misuse of her identity through artificial intelligence-generated content. She has raised concerns about online material that purportedly uses her likeness and persona without authorization.

Allegations Against AI-Generated Content

According to her plea reported by IANS, Preity alleged that content created using artificial intelligence was produced and circulated across digital platforms without her approval. She claims such content infringes upon her personality rights and copyright protections. The actress also argued that the alleged misuse could cause reputational damage. The petition seeks legal remedies against those involved in creating, publishing, or distributing such content online. Apart from personality rights, she alleged a violation of her moral rights under the Copyright Act, 1957. Through this legal action, she seeks protection against the continued circulation of the disputed material.

Bombay High Court Grants Permission

The matter was heard by a single-judge bench of Justice Abhay Ahuja. After considering the plea, the court granted permission allowing Preity to proceed with an injunction suit. This order is significant as it clears the way for her to formally pursue legal action against the respondents. During the hearing, jurisdiction issues were also considered. Since several entities connected to the case are reportedly based outside Mumbai, questions arose about the appropriate forum for adjudication. The court observed that some alleged activities were linked to online platforms operating across multiple locations. It further noted that several respondents maintain offices beyond Mumbai's territorial limits. Despite these factors, the court granted the required leave and clarified it would be empowered to hear and decide the matter. The order allows the suit to move forward before the Bombay High Court.
