Congress Leader Slams Ananya Panday's Bharatanatyam

Congress leader Dr. Shama Mohamed has sparked a controversy by criticizing actress Ananya Panday's portrayal of Bharatanatyam in an upcoming Bollywood film. In a series of posts on social media, Dr. Mohamed expressed her disappointment, stating that the actress has 'killed' her favorite dance form.

Dr. Shama Mohamed's Critique

Dr. Mohamed, who learned Bharatanatyam from the age of seven to thirteen and performed her arangetram in Kuwait, emphasized that classical dance requires years of dedicated study and cannot be manufactured for a film. She urged Panday not to trivialize the art form.

Bollywood's Misrepresentation of South Indian Culture

Another user, Sree Harsha, echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that this is not the first time Bollywood has misrepresented South Indian culture. He cited an example from another film where rice was served in a four-compartment vessel typically used for side dishes, highlighting the industry's lack of cultural sensitivity.

The criticism has sparked a broader debate on social media about Bollywood's approach to depicting regional traditions and classical art forms. Many users have called for greater research and respect when portraying cultural elements in mainstream cinema.

Ananya Panday has yet to respond to the criticism. The film, which features her performing Bharatanatyam, is scheduled for release later this year.
