Ex-JPMorgan Banker Chirayu Rana to Represent Himself in Sex Harassment Case
Ex-JPMorgan Banker Chirayu Rana to Represent Himself in Case

In a dramatic turn of events during the first hearing of the high-profile Chirayu Rana case, the Nepali-origin former JPMorgan banker's attorney informed the court that he would be withdrawing from the case. Daniel Kaiser, who previously represented Jeffrey Epstein accusers, filed a consent to be discharged as Rana's counsel just hours before they were scheduled to appear in court. Despite this, Kaiser represented Rana at the May 26 hearing and notified the court that Rana would proceed pro se, representing himself, until he secures new legal representation.

Background of the Case

The case has garnered significant media attention as Chirayu Rana leveled serious allegations against his co-worker Lorna Hajdini, accusing her of making him her sex slave. Both Hajdini and JPMorgan have dismissed these claims. Court documents have revealed that the company attempted to settle the matter internally, offering Rana a financial settlement. However, Rana demanded a larger sum and subsequently filed a lawsuit against Hajdini.

Changes in Legal Teams

Lorna Hajdini has also changed her legal representation and is now being represented by Samuel S. Shaulson of Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP. Shaulson previously represented Morgan Stanley in a 2018 case where a male employee accused the bank and seven named employees of discrimination. In that case, Mahmoud Latif, a gay Muslim associate at Morgan Stanley, alleged that the bank discriminated and harassed him based on his sexual orientation, religion, and other protected traits. Latif claimed that a female supervisor sexually assaulted him and subjected him to inappropriate touching and sexual advances shortly after his hiring in 2017. Morgan Stanley settled Latif's case for an undisclosed amount in 2021.

Rana's Defense and Counterclaims

Since the lawsuit was filed, Rana's former attorney Kaiser had been actively defending Rana and countering various claims. One notable allegation was that Rana took bereavement leave from JPMorgan citing his father's death, while his father is reportedly still alive. Kaiser defended Rana, stating that the leave was for the death of a father-figure.

The case continues to unfold, with both parties now represented by new legal counsel. Rana's decision to represent himself marks a significant development in the proceedings.
