Kumaraswamy urges police outpost at Cauvery river site
Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Kumaraswamy has written to Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge, requesting the establishment of a police outpost near the Cauvery river at Muthathi in Mandya district. The move aims to enhance safety and prevent drowning incidents at the popular but perilous river spot.
Safety concerns at Muthathi
Despite the installation of warning boards cautioning visitors against entering the river, many tourists and locals ignore the advisories, leading to frequent accidents. Local residents have complained that the current measures are insufficient to deter risky behaviour. Kumaraswamy emphasised the need for a permanent police presence to enforce safety rules and respond quickly to emergencies.

In his letter, dated 26 June 2026, Kumaraswamy highlighted that Muthathi, located along the Cauvery, is a popular picnic spot that attracts large crowds, especially during weekends and holidays. He noted that the absence of law enforcement personnel has resulted in repeated tragedies. The police outpost, he argued, would serve as a deterrent and ensure immediate assistance during distress calls.
According to local reports, at least five drowning deaths have occurred at Muthathi in the past two years. The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority has also flagged the area as high-risk. Kumaraswamy urged Kharge to expedite the process, stating that the outpost should be operational before the next peak tourist season.
Response from Home Minister
As of now, Priyank Kharge has not publicly responded to the request. However, sources in the Home Department indicate that the matter is under consideration. A senior official said, "The government is aware of the safety issues at Muthathi and is exploring options to strengthen surveillance and rescue operations."
Local community support
Residents of nearby villages have welcomed Kumaraswamy's initiative. A local shopkeeper told reporters, "We have seen many accidents here. A police outpost will make people feel safer and also control unruly behaviour." Another resident added that warning boards alone are ineffective and that visible enforcement is necessary.
Broader context
The Cauvery river at Muthathi is known for its strong currents and deep channels, making it particularly dangerous for inexperienced swimmers. The district administration has previously conducted awareness campaigns, but compliance remains low. The proposed police outpost is expected to be manned round-the-clock and equipped with basic rescue gear.
Kumaraswamy's letter is part of his ongoing efforts to address public safety in Mandya, a district he represents in the Lok Sabha. The issue has also drawn attention from opposition parties, who have criticised the state government for neglecting rural infrastructure.
