IMO Chief Warns Against Using Shipping as Collateral in Geopolitical Conflicts
International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has issued a stark warning that seafarers are feeling forgotten amid escalating geopolitical tensions, and that the shipping industry should not be used as collateral in conflicts such as the ongoing US-Iran standoff. Speaking during a virtual press conference, Dominguez emphasized the need for better protection of maritime workers and the global supply chain.
Key Message: Protect Seafarers and Shipping Neutrality
“For me, the key message is very loud and clear. We need to look after the seafarers better, and shipping should not be used as collateral in any geopolitical conflict,” Dominguez said in response to a question by PTI. His remarks come as the US-Iran conflict has heightened risks for commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters, with several ships detained or targeted in recent months.
The IMO chief highlighted that seafarers are often caught in the crossfire of political disputes, facing delays, detention, and even safety threats. He called on all nations to respect the freedom of navigation and ensure the welfare of crew members, who are essential to global trade.
Impact on Global Trade and Seafarer Welfare
According to the IMO, approximately 90% of global trade is transported by sea, making the shipping industry a backbone of the world economy. Dominguez noted that any disruption to shipping routes due to geopolitical conflicts can have cascading effects on supply chains, leading to higher costs and shortages. He urged governments to prioritize diplomatic solutions and avoid using maritime assets as leverage.
The statement comes amid reports of increased tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for oil and gas shipments. The IMO has been working with member states to establish safe corridors and ensure the protection of seafarers, but Dominguez stressed that more needs to be done to address their sense of abandonment.
Call for International Cooperation
Dominguez called for stronger international cooperation to safeguard the rights and safety of seafarers, including access to medical care, timely repatriation, and fair treatment under international law. He reiterated that shipping must remain neutral and not be weaponized in any conflict. The IMO is expected to raise these issues at upcoming UN meetings to push for binding resolutions.
