Green Party leader Zack Polanski has issued an apology after sharing a social media post that criticized police handling of the arrest of a suspect in the Golders Green stabbing attack. The controversy erupted when Polanski reshared a message on X that appeared to question the actions of officers during the arrest, claiming they used excessive force on a man who had already been restrained. The post drew sharp criticism, including from Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley.
Polanski's Statement of Regret
In a formal statement, Polanski expressed regret for sharing the post, acknowledging it was done without proper thought. He said, “Everyone in leadership has a responsibility for lowering the temperature at a time of such tension, and I apologise for sharing a tweet in haste.” He emphasized that while police actions can be reviewed, social media is not the appropriate platform for such discussions. “Police responses to emergency situations such as these do need later reflection in the right forums, but I accept that social media is not the appropriate channel for doing so,” he added.
Outreach to Metropolitan Police Commissioner
Polanski also revealed that he has reached out to Sir Mark Rowley to discuss the matter further. “I have invited Mark Rowley to meet with me to discuss the police response and the wider issues raised,” he stated. The incident pertains to the police response to the Golders Green stabbing, which is being treated as a terrorist case. The Metropolitan Police has not issued any further comment on the matter.
This incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding public commentary on police actions, especially in high-tension cases involving terrorism. Polanski's apology underscores the importance of responsible leadership in public discourse. The Golders Green attack remains under investigation, and police continue to urge the public to avoid speculation on social media.
