Analyzing the emotions, Perel claimed that having someone close break your trust is one thing, but their acknowledgment of the actions is another. “The next consequence of the breach of trust or the violation of trust is when I stop trusting myself as a result of it,” the expert stated. She added that even if the person who caused the doubt has been absent for 10 years, the hurt can linger. “I've lost my confidence. I'm constantly waiting and watching to see if other people will do something to me because of you,” she said.

When Paltrow asked if there is a way back to trust after experiencing infidelity, Perel answered, “Yes,” but noted that this is not possible for everyone. Furthermore, the actress wondered if the pain is the same for a temporary infatuation versus a serious relationship. “To some people, a one-night stand is as painful as a 20-year affair,” Perel said.
