A constable named Pawan Kanaujia has been suspended in Banda on charges of sexually exploiting a woman under the pretext of marriage and stealing her cash and jewellery. The action was taken after the Hamirpur Superintendent of Police (SP) initiated proceedings based on a complaint.
Details of the Complaint
The woman, a resident of the Kalinjar police station area, submitted a complaint letter to the SP. She alleged that she first came into contact with Kanaujia in 2021, when he was posted in that area. According to her statement, the constable held her captive and sexually exploited her for a period of five years. She further claimed that despite lodging multiple complaints with the authorities, no action was taken against the accused.
Inquiry and FIR
Following the receipt of the complaint, Banda SP Palash Bansal ordered an inquiry into the allegations. After the investigation was completed, an FIR for rape was registered against the constable last Tuesday. The registration of the FIR marked a significant step in the legal proceedings.
Departmental Action
Subsequently, Hamirpur SP Mrigank Shekhar Pathak initiated a departmental inquiry against the constable and suspended him from duty. Pathak confirmed that the constable has been attached to the police lines pending further investigation. The suspension is a disciplinary measure while the departmental inquiry continues.
This case highlights the importance of timely action on complaints of sexual exploitation and the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies.
