You might expect a man who bears the weight of the Crown to spend his days brooding in gilded corridors, speaking only in formal declarations and prepared statements. But King Charles III has spent decades proving that theory wrong. He possesses a sense of humor—not the stiff, obligatory kind you would anticipate from someone whose job title comes with centuries of protocol. His humor is the kind that catches you off guard, making you forget you are standing next to a monarch and think, "Wait, did he really just say that?"
The Unexpected Moments
In 1998, for his 50th birthday Prince's Trust gala, Charles appeared in a comedy sketch alongside Stephen Fry and Roger Moore, playing a waiter with a towel draped over his arm, asking celebrity diners if the food had been to their satisfaction. Years later, that willingness to participate remained intact. At the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert honoring Queen Elizabeth, Charles began his remarks by saying, "Your Majesty, mummy." It is the kind of thing only someone secure in themselves would do—standing before thousands and cracking a joke about calling his mother by her formal title.
During a Prince's Trust concert in 2006, he said, "I must say that this is the moment when I wish I could sing." As the crowd applauded, egging him on, William shook his head and gestured "no" behind him. Charles continued, "I know my limitations. But at least I have my glow stick." What makes Charles' humor particularly effective is that it comes from nowhere. You do not expect the monarch to have an opinion on the weather forecast he is delivering. Yet during a visit to BBC Scotland in 2012, while reporting on snow over Balmoral Castle, Charles quipped, "Who the hell wrote this script?" The same goes for when Charles visited the set of Doctor Who in 2013 and voiced a Dalek, saying "Exterminate! Exterminate!" into the microphone at BBC studios in Cardiff.

Perhaps the best version of Charles' humor is when he sees an opening and takes it. In 2014, when the chairman of the British Sub-Aqua Club described Charles as "rather buff" in a 1970s photograph, Charles joked that Prince William was now displaying his own "buff credentials" as the new president. Most recently, during a garden party at the British Ambassador's residence in Washington, D.C. during his 2026 state visit to America, comedian Matt Friend performed an impression of Charles right to his face. Without missing a beat, Charles offered a playful critique, simply replying, "Keep trying." A king who can laugh—that is something worth smiling about.
