Thanks to Lagaan, I remain the first cricketer in the world to take a hat-trick. It’s a record that nobody will be able to break,” jokes Aditya Lakhia, whose portrayal of Kachra in the film remains a milestone moment in his career and one of the most memorable characters in Indian cinema. With the film completing 25 years recently and re-releasing in theatres, Lakhia fondly remembers his association with the film. Excerpts:
‘I pleaded with Ashutosh Gowariker for a shot at Kachra’s role’
Although I did big films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Lagaan completely changed my life. I had assisted Ashutosh Gowariker on his debut film (Pehla Nasha) and when I got to know that he was collaborating with Aamir for a film, I would go to his office almost daily and plead with him, “I have to do this film!” This went on for almost a year (laughs), and eventually I got to audition for the role of Kachra. Every actor wants recognition for his work, and this role gave me recognition, respect and standing in the industry. I got a lot of roles after the film, and it also ensured financial security. I remain indebted to Aamir and Ashutosh for believing that I could pull it off.
‘Lagaan changed the way Bollywood functioned’
When I read the script, I knew I had a powerful role, even though I had very few dialogues. The climax scene, in particular, was really strong. Although I knew it was a very powerful character, I had no clue that Kachra would become such an iconic character. It became a landmark film, and the entire industry is proud of it. It changed the way Bollywood functioned. I am so glad to see Kachra memes all over the internet even today, especially when Team India is playing. While celebrating 25 years of Lagaan, we had a great reunion, and I became very nostalgic after watching the film again on the big screen. It was an exhilarating experience.
‘Aamir really believed in the film’
Before Lagaan, nobody had shot at a stretch for six months at the same location. At times, the weather was extreme and while it posed challenges, we coped with it well. Everything was planned so well that we never had to focus on anything except our roles. Aamir (Khan) really believed in the film. And when he believes in a script, he goes all out to make sure that everyone does justice to the story. We were like one big family on the set. We also remain grateful to Jhamu Sughand (co-producer) for his constant support.
