Mumbai Mayor Takes Strong Stance Against Obscene Comedy Remarks

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Friday issued a stern warning that "obscene and hateful statements" made under the guise of entertainment will not be tolerated. She announced strict action regarding controversial remarks made during a live stand-up comedy show by comedian Pranit More.

The statement follows the viral circulation of two clips from More's show on social media. In one clip, a participant allegedly recounted an incident involving objectionable behavior towards a woman. In another clip, Sejal Pawar, a medical student associated with KEM Hospital, allegedly made offensive and obscene remarks about cadavers donated for medical education.

Inquiry Committee Formed at KEM Hospital

In a statement from the mayor's office, Tawde revealed that the KEM Hospital administration has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the conduct of the medical student. The committee has been directed to take strict action if warranted.

"The Maharashtra Cyber Department has already initiated legal action by registering a case, and the BMC supports the process," the mayor stated.

Call for Responsible Content Creation

Tawde urged artists and digital content creators to act responsibly, emphasizing that freedom of expression is an essential part of democracy but cannot be used to justify obscenity, hate speech, or content that demeans women or undermines public sensitivities.

She highlighted that issues concerning women, consent, and the medical profession require a high degree of sensitivity. Content capable of sending a wrong message to society should not be normalized in the guise of comedy. The mayor also stressed the growing influence of social media on young audiences and urged creators to balance creativity with ethical responsibility.

Opposition Demands Criminal Action

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the BMC, Kishori Pednekar, staged a protest at KEM Hospital on Friday afternoon. She demanded strict criminal action against the woman doctor, the organizers of the stand-up comedy program, and its broadcaster over the alleged obscene remarks about a deceased person's body.

The incident has sparked widespread debate on the limits of comedy and the responsibility of content creators in India.
