Patient's Relatives Assault Four Women Doctors at Mumbai Hospital

Mumbai: Four female resident doctors from the gynaecology department at Kurla Bhabha Hospital were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient who died a day after childbirth on Wednesday night. The doctors reported that a mob of about 100 people attacked them, with one doctor stating, 'My head was banged against the wall and another colleague was slapped.'

Incident Details

The 29-year-old patient had undergone an emergency C-section on Tuesday and delivered a healthy child. The following night, she complained of abdominal pain and breathlessness. Her blood oxygen levels dropped to 86%, and she was shifted to the emergency ward, where she was placed on a ventilator after losing consciousness. Despite medical efforts, her condition worsened, and she was declared dead. One resident doctor said, 'We delayed declaring her death out of fear of the mob.'

Hospital Response and Demands

The hospital filed an institutional FIR only the next day, allegedly after hours of pleading by the resident doctors. Hospital officials were unavailable for comment. The mob also caused damage to hospital property. In response to the attack, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors has demanded enhanced security measures, including better hospital security and installation of CCTV cameras.
