Veteran Bollywood director David Dhawan has announced that his upcoming film, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, will be his last. At 76, Dhawan is bidding farewell to filmmaking after a prolific career spanning 46 films.
Why David Dhawan is Retiring
Speaking about his decision, Dhawan said, "Bass ab bahot ho gaya. I am 76. I have made 46 films. Most of them were successful. I hope my new film too will be liked. I am sure it will. I have poured my heart and soul into it." He emphasized that entertainment has always been the primary purpose of cinema for him.
Sticking to His Formula
Dhawan has often been asked to change his filmmaking style, but he sees no reason to. "Why fiddle with the bonnet when your car is running smoothly?" he questioned. He cited his mentor Manmohan Desai, who faced rejection when he tried to deviate from his signature style in Aa Gale Lag Jaa.
His Favorite Film
When asked where Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai ranks among his works, Dhawan replied, "Are you asking if it is my favourite? Right now, yes. All my films are my favourites. Even the less successful ones like Yaarana and Mr & Mrs Khiladi." He added that he always puts himself in the audience's shoes and makes films they enjoy.
Working with Son Varun Dhawan
Dhawan, who has directed his son Varun in several films, praised his talent and work ethic. "Varun is very talented and hardworking. If he wasn't, I wouldn't work with him. On the sets, we are totally professional. In fact, I am stricter with him than with other actors," he said.
Life After Filmmaking
Looking ahead, Dhawan plans to spend time with his grandchildren and wife, whom he neglected while working round the clock. He also intends to watch many movies—but not his own.
