Newcomer director Kalaiyarasan Thangavel has quickly made a mark in Tamil cinema with his debut feature 'Aan Paavam Pollathathu'. The film, which received a positive response in theatres and is now streaming on OTT platforms, is being noted for its social consciousness and the filmmaker's candid approach. A significant part of the conversation post-release has revolved around its perspective on gender dynamics.
Prioritizing Equality in Character Design
In a revealing interview with Cinema Vikatan, Kalaiyarasan directly addressed the central debate. He explained that gender equality was a clear priority from the screenplay stage itself. "We were very careful not to spread false ideas," the director stated. To ensure authenticity, he undertook thorough research, consulting with lawyers and engaging with several women's and men's equality groups. This process helped him discern which concepts were necessary for the narrative and which could be potentially misconstrued by the audience.
Embracing Criticism and Clarifying the Theme
Kalaiyarasan displayed notable humility in accepting audience feedback. "The audience is always right. They pay money to watch the film. If their criticism is correct, it is my responsibility," he asserted. He acknowledged specific criticisms that some scenes inadvertently reflected patriarchal notions. The director clarified that the film's core theme is self-realization and growth for both the male and female protagonists. "The theme of the film is that both the hero and heroine of the story realize their flaws and grow. I could have said it more clearly, that's my regret," he admitted frankly, emphasizing his intent to avoid promoting any misguided politics.
Acknowledging the Technical Team's Collective Effort
Kalaiyarasan was effusive in praising the technical crew behind the film's success. He highlighted contributions from cinematographer Madhesh Manickam to music composer Siddhu Kumar, whom he likened to a "genie" for his elevating soundscapes. He also credited editor Varun KG for being as supportive as a co-director. The director firmly believes that the film's reach and the positive aspects appreciated by fans are a direct result of this collective team effort.
Looking ahead, Kalaiyarasan expressed optimism. The warm reception to his debut has instilled a sense of responsibility, and he aims to tell compelling stories with greater creative freedom. His open-mindedness to feedback, commitment to equitable storytelling, and respect for collaborative filmmaking hint at a promising directorial journey ahead.
