Jisshu Sengupta Highlights Financial Divide Between Bengali and Bollywood Cinema
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, acclaimed Bengali film superstar Jisshu Sengupta has candidly discussed the profound differences separating the Hindi and Bengali film industries. The actor pinpointed budget as the single most significant factor creating this cinematic divide, offering detailed insights into the economic realities of regional filmmaking.
The Stark Budgetary Reality
Jisshu Sengupta emphasized that financial scale remains the primary differentiator. He stated, "It's fundamentally about the money. The average budget for a Bengali film typically revolves around 3 crore rupees. While occasional productions may reach 8-9 crores, such instances are rare, occurring perhaps once every two or three years. The standard Bengali cinema operates within a 2.5 to 3.5 crore range maximum. That financial limitation constitutes the core distinction."
The actor further elaborated on how these budgetary constraints directly impact production schedules and artistic scope, creating a fundamentally different working environment compared to big-budget Hindi cinema.
Contrasting Production Timelines and Scale
Sengupta highlighted the remarkable efficiency required in Bengali filmmaking due to financial limitations. He explained, "In the Bengali cinema industry, we routinely complete an entire film, including three to four songs, within an average of 16 to 18 days. We accomplish this regularly. In Bollywood, such a compressed timeline is virtually unthinkable for most productions."
Drawing a vivid comparison with high-budget Bollywood projects, the actor provided a striking example: "Consider a large-scale Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. A single musical sequence alone might require eight to ten days of dedicated shooting. In that same timeframe, we in Bengali cinema could complete approximately 60 percent of an entire feature film. This disparity underscores how financial resources dictate production pace and artistic ambition."
Bengali Talent Flourishing in Bollywood
Despite the budgetary differences, Sengupta proudly noted the significant presence and success of Bengali professionals within the Hindi film industry. He remarked, "Numerous Bengalis are currently thriving in Bollywood across various technical and creative roles. We have exceptional technicians, directors of photography like Sudeep Sarkar who collaborates with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and many other accomplished professionals."
The actor specifically highlighted musical contributions, stating, "Look at renowned music directors such as Pritam and Shantanu Moitra—both are Bengali talents achieving national recognition. In terms of raw talent and technical expertise, there exists no qualitative difference between professionals from both industries. The distinction lies purely in the financial resources available for production."
Upcoming Professional Endeavors
On the professional front, Jisshu Sengupta is preparing for his role in the upcoming comedy-horror film Bhooth Bangla, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan. The project features an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Rajpal Yadav, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on April 10, marking another cross-industry collaboration for the versatile actor.
