DGHS Advisory on Heat Stress Management
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued a comprehensive advisory to safeguard citizens from heat stress and related illnesses, with a special emphasis on traditional Ayurvedic remedies. The advisory comes in response to the rising temperatures across the country, which pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Key Recommendations
The advisory outlines several preventive measures to combat heat stress. Citizens are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty. Avoid carbonated and sugary drinks, as they can exacerbate dehydration. Wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing is recommended to facilitate heat dissipation. Additionally, individuals should limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically between 12 PM and 4 PM.
Ayush Remedies Included
In a unique inclusion, the DGHS has recommended several Ayurvedic practices to help the body cope with heat. These include consuming buttermilk with a pinch of salt and roasted cumin seeds, which aids in digestion and cooling the body. Another suggestion is to drink a glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of honey and lemon juice to replenish electrolytes. The advisory also highlights the benefits of applying sandalwood paste on the forehead to provide a cooling effect.
Special Precautions for Vulnerable Groups
The advisory specifically warns about the risks for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions. These groups are urged to take extra care, such as staying in shaded or air-conditioned environments and monitoring for early signs of heat-related illnesses like headache, dizziness, and excessive sweating. Immediate medical attention is advised if symptoms of heat stroke, such as confusion, loss of consciousness, or high body temperature, are observed.
Community and Workplace Measures
Employers and community leaders are encouraged to implement measures such as providing adequate shade, cool drinking water, and flexible work schedules to minimize heat exposure. The advisory also suggests organizing awareness campaigns to educate the public about heat stress prevention.
The DGHS emphasizes that while these measures are effective, they should be complemented by a healthy lifestyle and adherence to local weather warnings. By combining modern preventive strategies with traditional wisdom, the advisory aims to reduce the burden of heat-related illnesses during the summer months.
