Tamil Nadu Unani Association Conducts Free Healthcare Camp in Madurai
The Tamil Nadu Unani Medical Association successfully organized a complimentary medical camp at the Madurai collectorate on Monday. This initiative was specifically designed to deliver traditional healthcare services and enhance public understanding of the unani system of medicine.
Camp Held in Honor of National Unani Day
The event was strategically timed to coincide with National Unani Day, which is observed annually on February 11. A dedicated team of unani practitioners, hailing from both public and private hospitals, volunteered their expertise to provide free consultations and treatments to attendees.
Patients at the camp received personalized herbal prescriptions and experienced traditional unani external therapies, including dhalak (massage therapy) and hijama (cupping therapy). Additionally, the association distributed topical applications to individuals requiring them.
Educational Outreach on Unani Medicine's Heritage
Dr. J. Ershad, the president of the Tamil Nadu Unani Medical Association, elaborated on the historical significance of unani medicine. He explained that this system, often termed Graeco-Arabic medicine, traces its roots to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates.
"While its origins lie in Greece, unani medicine was further developed and refined in the Arab world and Persia before being introduced to India during the 11th century," Dr. Ershad stated. "Today, it holds official recognition from the Government of India as one of the national systems of medicine under the Ministry of Ayush."
He emphasized that the camp served as a vital platform to educate the community about the effectiveness of unani medicine. Dr. Ershad noted, "Although unani is recognized alongside ayurveda and other traditional practices, ongoing outreach is essential to help people comprehend its holistic advantages and integrated approach to health."
The association's efforts underscore a commitment to preserving and promoting this ancient medical tradition, ensuring it remains accessible and understood by the public in contemporary healthcare landscapes.
