5 Weird Signs Your Gut Is Healthy, Doctor Reveals

A sudden rumble from your stomach during a quiet meeting or a loud growl that echoes across the room might make you think something is wrong. Many people reach for antacids or rush to schedule a doctor's appointment, believing a silent gut is a healthy gut. But according to Dr Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist trained at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, these sounds and other seemingly odd bodily functions can actually be signs of excellent gut health. In a recent video shared on Instagram, Dr Salhab outlined five weird signs that indicate your digestive system is working just as it should.

1. Your Stomach Growls and Rumbles

Contrary to popular belief, a noisy stomach is not necessarily a cause for concern. Dr Salhab explains that these sounds are part of what he calls the gut's cleaning cycle. “It’s basically your gut’s cleaning cycle. Those sounds happen when waves of contractions move gas, fluid, and leftover food through your intestines between meals. This process, called the migrating motor complex, helps sweep bacteria and debris through the small intestine and eventually to the colon,” he said. So, the next time your stomach lets out a loud growl, consider it a positive sign that your digestive tract is actively maintaining itself.

2. You Fart All the Time

Flatulence is often considered embarrassing, but it is a normal and necessary bodily function. Dr Salhab emphasizes that passing gas is a crucial indicator of gut health. “Your gut bacteria are extracting antioxidants from your food, fermenting fibre, producing anti-inflammatory compounds, and producing gas as a by-product,” he explained. He noted that a healthy individual typically passes gas between 10 and 20 times per day. Rather than being a sign of trouble, frequent flatulence suggests that your microbiome is actively breaking down nutrients and supporting your overall health.

3. You Poop Shortly After Eating or When You’re Excited

If you find yourself rushing to the bathroom soon after a meal or when you are feeling excited, do not worry. This response is known as the gastrocolic reflex. “When your stomach stretches from a meal—or when your body is stimulated by things like excitement—it signals the colon to contract and move stool along. Your body is essentially making room for incoming food,” Dr Salhab explained. This reflex is a normal physiological reaction and indicates that your digestive system is responsive and efficient.

4. You Have Ghost Poop

The term “ghost poop” might sound strange, but it refers to a bowel movement that leaves minimal residue on toilet paper. According to Dr Salhab, this is a positive sign. “Well-formed stool that passes easily and leaves minimal residue is often a sign of good fibre intake, hydration, and balanced gut bacteria,” he said. If you experience ghost poops regularly, it suggests your diet and digestive processes are well balanced.

5. You Poop More Than Once a Day

Many people believe that having one bowel movement per day is the gold standard, but Dr Salhab says that pooping up to three times daily can be perfectly normal. “A lot of people think once per day is the rule, but pooping up to about three times per day can be normal. The key is that the stool should be formed and easy to pass. Frequent watery stools or diarrhoea would be abnormal,” he clarified. As long as your stools are well formed and not accompanied by discomfort, multiple daily bowel movements are nothing to worry about.

What You Should Know

Your body sends constant signals about its health, but many people misinterpret these cues. Dr Salhab’s insights remind us that what might seem weird or embarrassing can actually be a sign of a well-functioning digestive system. So, the next time you feel gassy or hear your stomach growling, remember that it might just be your gut telling you it is healthy.
