In a distressing incident in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district, at least 62 individuals reportedly fell ill after consuming 'prasad' during a religious ceremony held at a private residence, officials stated on Saturday. The event took place in Simuapur village, where a 'Satyanarayan Katha' was organized at the home of Munna Lal Kashyap on Friday night, as per news agency PTI.
Details of the Incident
The 'prasad' distributed among devotees included 'panchamrit' and 'panjiri'. Shortly after consumption, several attendees began experiencing health issues during the night. Initially, family members sought treatment from nearby private practitioners, but as conditions worsened, all affected individuals were transferred to the district hospital.
Dr. Akanksha at the district hospital reported that 62 patients had arrived by 10:30 pm. Among them, 14 patients in critical condition were referred to the Medical College in Tirwa, located within Kannauj district. The remaining patients are currently undergoing treatment involving intravenous drips and medications. Officials confirmed that the condition of most patients is stable.
Official Response
Upon receiving information about the incident, District Magistrate Ashutosh Mohan Agnihotri, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Swadesh Gupta, and Additional Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar visited the district hospital to assess the situation. The officials inquired about the patients' conditions and directed hospital staff to ensure proper medical treatment and care.
The authorities are investigating the cause of the illness, likely due to contaminated or improperly prepared prasad. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
