From July 1, Karnataka will begin door-to-door verification of beneficiaries under the state's free power scheme, the energy department announced on Tuesday. Meter readers and Escom staff will visit consumers' homes to check records and collect beneficiary information. This process will be completed on-site using a mobile application and a declaration form, the department said in a statement.
Verification process details
The verification drive aims to ensure that only eligible households receive free electricity under the scheme, which provides up to 200 units of free power per month to eligible consumers. Staff from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and other Escoms will conduct the checks. Consumers are required to present identification documents and sign a declaration form confirming their eligibility.
According to the energy department, the mobile application will allow staff to upload data instantly, reducing paperwork and streamlining the process. The department emphasized that no additional charges will be levied for the verification.
Impact on consumers
The door-to-door verification is expected to cover all beneficiaries across the state over the next few months. Consumers have been advised to cooperate with officials and keep necessary documents ready. The scheme, launched earlier this year, has been a key initiative of the state government to provide relief to low-income households.
“This verification will help us identify and remove ineligible beneficiaries, ensuring that the subsidy reaches those who truly need it,” an energy department official said.
