Minister Seeks Special Package for Arecanut Growers
Karnataka Minister K J George has announced that he will urge Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to provide a special package for arecanut growers in the district. The minister highlighted the severe losses faced by farmers due to crop damage and stressed the need for immediate financial relief.
Delegation to Meet CM
George suggested that elected representatives from the district should form a delegation to meet the Chief Minister and press for compensation. He emphasized that the affected growers require urgent support to sustain their livelihoods.
Background of the Crisis
Arecanut cultivation is a major economic activity in the region, and recent adverse weather conditions have led to significant crop losses. Farmers have been demanding government intervention to mitigate their financial burden.
According to George, the package would include direct compensation and other measures to support the growers. He stated, "We will ensure that the concerns of the farmers are conveyed to the Chief Minister at the earliest."
Political Implications
The move comes ahead of the upcoming assembly sessions, where opposition parties are expected to raise the issue. The Congress government in Karnataka has been under pressure to address agrarian distress, and this initiative is seen as a step to pacify the farming community.
