A special court under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Ahmedabad has sentenced a local resident to eight years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant drug. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict.
Case Details
The convict, Mohammed Shahid Qureshi, a resident of Dariapur, was arrested along with co-accused Imrankhan Pathan in September 2023 by the Karanj police from the Bhadra area. They were found in possession of 41 grams of mephedrone, a banned substance under the NDPS Act. Following a thorough trial, special NDPS judge V B Rajput found Qureshi guilty, while Pathan was acquitted due to insufficient evidence against him.
Trial and Evidence
Additional public prosecutor D M Thakor presented a robust case, examining 12 witnesses and submitting 33 pieces of documentary evidence to establish the guilt of the accused. The court meticulously reviewed the evidence before delivering its verdict.
In his judgment, judge Rajput emphasized the grave threat posed by drug trafficking, stating, "In the present time, drug trafficking is a very serious and challenging issue. Many families are destroyed because of such an accused who is running drug rackets. Teenagers going to school and college ruin their youth due to addiction to such substances. In this way, the youth of the country is being ruined."
Court's Observations
The court highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse on society, particularly on young people. It noted that drug traffickers exploit vulnerable individuals, leading to the destruction of families and the ruination of the nation's youth. The sentence of eight years and the fine of Rs 1 lakh were intended to serve as a deterrent and set an example for others involved in the illegal drug trade.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the judiciary to combat drug trafficking in Gujarat and across India. The conviction sends a strong message that those involved in the possession or distribution of narcotics will face severe consequences.
