The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified its enforcement drives in the Behrampura and Lambha wards this week as part of a concerted effort to curb waterborne diseases. The operation, focused on unhygienic food outlets and littering hotspots, was carried out in the South Zone of the city.
Joint Inspection by Multiple Departments
A joint drive involving the health department, solid waste management department, and estate department was conducted. Officials inspected a total of 64 units across the two wards. The estate department took stringent action against vendors selling unhygienic panipuri and those responsible for littering in public spaces.
Seizures and Penalties
During the inspections, six panipuri carts were seized, and penalties amounting to Rs 37,000 were recovered from violators. Additionally, authorities destroyed 10 kilograms of inedible food items and 17 litres of unfit liquids that were found during the checks. These items were deemed hazardous for consumption and were disposed of immediately to prevent any health risks.
Fines for Littering and Poor Waste Management
The South Zone solid waste management department has been actively collecting fines from units operating in vegetable markets, commercial complexes, and food markets. A total of Rs 21 lakh has been collected in penalties from establishments that failed to keep dustbins in place and caused public littering. This ongoing enforcement aims to improve hygiene standards and reduce the spread of diseases.
The AMC has urged all food vendors and market operators to adhere to cleanliness norms and ensure proper waste disposal. Citizens are also encouraged to report any instances of unhygienic practices to the municipal authorities. The civic body has warned of stricter action in the future if compliance does not improve.
