Apollo Foundation Marks Thalassemia Day with Survivors

Chennai: Marking World Thalassemia Day 2026, the Apollo Cancer Foundation, in collaboration with Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Teynampet, reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to advanced treatment for children battling thalassemia. The foundation celebrated the journeys of 30 survivors while highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen paediatric haematology and thalassemia care across India.

Advanced Bone Marrow Transplant Programmes

The foundation announced plans to continue expanding advanced bone marrow transplant (BMT) programmes, awareness initiatives, early diagnosis support, and long-term patient care. These efforts aim to enhance treatment outcomes for children suffering from thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder requiring regular transfusions and complex medical interventions.

Support for Economically Weaker Backgrounds

As part of its commitment, Apollo Cancer Foundation, in association with Coal India Limited, is supporting access to bone marrow transplantation for children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds under the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana initiative. This programme ensures that financial constraints do not hinder life-saving treatment for young patients.

Impressive Success Rates

Apollo Hospitals reported completing over 500 thalassemia bone marrow transplants, with the programme achieving a remarkable 93% thalassemia-free survival rate. Additionally, the hospital group has introduced haplo-identical transplants, a breakthrough procedure for children who lack fully matched donors, thereby expanding treatment options.

Dr. Preetha Reddy emphasised that greater awareness, early screening, and timely treatment could significantly improve outcomes for children affected by thalassemia. The foundation continues to advocate for these measures to reduce the burden of the disease.

By combining advanced medical technology with community outreach, Apollo Cancer Foundation aims to transform thalassemia care in India, offering hope to countless families. The celebration of 30 survivors serves as a testament to the progress made and the ongoing dedication to eradicating the challenges posed by this condition.
