The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has issued prohibitory orders and measures to curb the wastage of drinking water in Bengaluru. The move comes as the city faces increasing water scarcity, with the board aiming to ensure judicious use of the precious resource.
Key Measures Announced
Under the new orders, any wastage of drinking water is strictly prohibited. This includes using drinking water for non-essential purposes such as washing vehicles, gardening, or construction activities. The BWSSB has warned that violators will face strict action, including fines or legal consequences.
Reporting Violations
Residents and citizens can report instances of water wastage to the BWSSB call centre by dialling 1916. The board has urged the public to cooperate and help enforce the regulations effectively. According to a BWSSB official, “We encourage everyone to be vigilant and report any misuse of drinking water to our helpline. Conservation is a collective responsibility.”
Impact and Context
Bengaluru has been grappling with severe water shortages, particularly during summer months. The prohibitory orders are part of a broader strategy to reduce wastage and promote sustainable water use. The BWSSB has also been implementing other measures, including rainwater harvesting and recycling, to augment water supply. The board expects these steps to significantly cut down on unnecessary consumption and ensure adequate water for essential needs.
