In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Cachar police arrested two individuals, including a former gram panchayat president, and confiscated a substantial quantity of suspected narcotics from the Sonai area of Cachar district. The operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs.
Raid and Recovery
A team from Sonai police station conducted a raid in New Ramnagar on Saturday, leading to the apprehension of 33-year-old Sabina Yasmin Barbhuiya, the former president of New Ramnagar gram panchayat. During a thorough search of her residence, police recovered 615.99 grams of suspected heroin, which was allegedly concealed inside 40 soap boxes. Additionally, 290 nitrazepam tablets, a psychotropic substance prohibited without valid authorization, were seized. A car was also impounded on suspicion of being used for transporting the contraband.
Link to Another Trafficker
During the investigation, police established connections between the seized drugs and another suspected trafficker, identified as Raju Hussain of Gumra. He was arrested later the same day by a special police team. Sources indicated that Barbhuiya's family members had previously faced narcotics-related allegations. Her husband, Abdul Wajid Barbhuiya, was reportedly arrested last year in connection with the possession and transportation of narcotic substances.
Ongoing Investigation
Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to determine whether this seizure is part of a larger drug trafficking network operating in the region. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Both accused were produced before a local court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
The authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking. The operation highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat the illicit drug trade in Assam.
