A Harvard-trained doctor has revealed six foods he consumes every day to ward off colon cancer, fatty liver, and other gut-related diseases. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist who trained at Harvard and Stanford, emphasizes that most gut diseases are preventable through diet. In a recent newsletter, he shared the six foods he eats daily to maintain optimal gut health.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are packed with fiber. Two tablespoons provide 10 grams of fiber, which is more than most people consume in an entire day. When soaked, chia seeds form a gel in the gut that slows digestion, feeds beneficial bacteria, and reduces blood sugar spikes. Dr. Sethi adds them to water overnight, calling it a 30-second habit with high leverage.
Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are another underrated superfood for gut health. Ground flaxseeds contain lignans, which gut bacteria convert into powerful anti-inflammatory molecules. Studies suggest that one tablespoon of flaxseeds daily is linked to a reduced risk of colon cancer. Dr. Sethi advises buying ground flaxseeds or grinding them yourself, as whole flaxseeds pass through undigested.
Walnuts
Walnuts are the only nuts with meaningful omega-3 content. A 2023 study showed that daily walnut consumption measurably increased microbiome diversity within eight weeks. Dr. Sethi recommends a small handful (30 grams) per day and keeps a jar on his desk.
Blueberries
Blueberries have the highest antioxidant density of any common fruit. Their polyphenols selectively feed Bifidobacterium, one of the most protective bacterial strains in the gut. Inflammation markers drop measurably within six weeks of daily consumption. Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh ones.
Fermented Dairy
Fermented dairy products like yogurt, kefir, and lassi contain more live bacterial strains than any probiotic supplement. Dr. Sethi advises looking for 'live active cultures' on the label and consuming one serving daily. He notes that this single habit has improved his patients' digestion more than any medication he has prescribed.
Eggs or Tofu
Eggs and tofu are unfairly maligned but deserve a place on your plate. They contain choline, essential for liver health. Eggs provide complete protein that supports gut lining repair, and cardiovascular research on moderate egg consumption is reassuring. For plant-based diets, tofu offers high protein, isoflavones that support a healthy microbiome, and anti-inflammatory properties.
The Bottom Line
While these six foods are excellent for gut health, you don't need to eat all of them every day. Dr. Sethi suggests starting with one, adding it to breakfast for two weeks, and noticing how your digestion changes. Your gut microbiome responds to dietary shifts within 72 hours, so the feedback loop is faster than most people realize.
