Hyderabad Police Investigate Death of Gallantry Awardee Officer Amid Allegations of Medical Negligence
In a distressing incident, the Madhapur police in Hyderabad have launched an investigation into the death of 60-year-old reserve sub-inspector (RSI) Thallapally Raja Sambaiah from the Siddipet Commissionerate. The probe follows serious allegations of medical negligence raised by his family, who claim that botched treatment at Yashoda Hospital in Hi-Tec City led to his demise on Friday.
Details of the Case and Police Response
The gallantry awardee police officer, a resident of Karimnagar, was admitted to the hospital under the Bhadratha Scheme, a welfare initiative for Telangana police personnel, for the removal of a long-standing gluteal lump. D Krishna Mohan, the station house officer (SHO) of Madhapur police station, confirmed that the body has been shifted to Osmania General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. "We are awaiting the report," Mohan stated. "Further action, including legal opinion on the allegations against the hospital, will be taken based on the findings." A case has been registered under Section 194 (suspicious death) of the BNSS based on a complaint filed by the officer's wife.
Family's Allegations of Procedural Lapses
In the FIR accessed by sources, the family of RSI Sambaiah has leveled grave accusations against the hospital. They allege that doctors ignored critical warning signs, performed surgery without adequate evaluation, and delayed essential care. Tallapalli Tirupatamma, the officer's wife, detailed in her complaint that her husband was admitted on March 7. Despite having hypertension, diabetes, and prior neurological concerns, key pre-operative tests such as MRI or CT scans were not conducted. "On March 9, my husband's blood pressure rose to a critical level, and the anaesthesiologist advised postponing the surgery as it could lead to a brain stroke or severe complications. However, the surgery was conducted on March 10," she asserted.
Post-Operative Complications and Fatal Outcome
Following the operation, Sambaiah was reportedly shifted to a general ward instead of the ICU. Within a short time, severe bleeding from the surgical site was observed, necessitating an emergency second surgery. He was later moved to the ICU, where scans revealed a massive stroke. His condition deteriorated rapidly, with brain damage escalating from 50% to 90% despite additional procedures. Tirupatamma added that he eventually died from brain failure, despite 20 minutes of CPR being administered. The family is demanding strict action against the hospital and has called for an investigation into whether medical protocols were violated and if the Bhadratha Scheme was misused during the treatment.
Hospital's Defense and Legal Implications
In response to the allegations, a source from Yashoda Hospitals maintained that there was no wrongdoing or procedural lapse on their part. "This will be established in a court of law if the case proceeds," the source told media outlets. The case highlights ongoing concerns about healthcare standards and accountability in medical practices, particularly under government welfare schemes. As the police await the post-mortem report, the outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for medical ethics and legal proceedings in Telangana.
