The Public Health Organization (PHO) has urged the central government to enact a dedicated bill to protect healthcare professionals from the increasing incidents of violence. The demand was made on National Doctors' Day, celebrated on July 1, highlighting the urgency of the issue.
Rising Violence Against Healthcare Workers
According to the PHO, attacks on doctors and medical staff have surged in recent years, with many incidents going unreported. The organization emphasized that healthcare workers face threats not only in emergency rooms but also in outpatient clinics and during home visits. A 2025 study by the Indian Medical Association found that over 75% of doctors in India have experienced some form of violence at work.
"The current legal framework is insufficient to deter perpetrators," said Dr. Anjali Sharma, PHO spokesperson. "We need a comprehensive law that ensures swift punishment and creates a safe environment for those who save lives."
National Doctors' Day Appeal
The PHO's appeal on National Doctors' Day underscores the need for immediate legislative action. The organization has proposed a model bill that includes stricter penalties, mandatory security measures in healthcare facilities, and a fast-track court system for related cases.
