IMD Issues Yellow Heat Warning for 12 Kerala Districts as Temperatures Soar
As scorching temperatures grip Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated its alert by issuing a 'Yellow Warning' for twelve districts across the state. This advisory signals an impending period of intense heat and significant discomfort for residents in the coming days, with conditions expected to persist until April 19.
Heatwave Conditions and Temperature Forecast
The IMD has forecast heatwave conditions across multiple districts, driven by a combination of elevated atmospheric temperatures and unusually high moisture levels. This meteorological mix is predicted to create exceptionally 'hot and humid' environments, where the 'real feel' or perceived temperature will substantially exceed actual thermometer readings.
Palakkad district is anticipated to bear the brunt of the heat, with temperatures sizzling at a peak of 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Kollam is forecast to reach 39 degrees, Kottayam 38 degrees, and several other districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod are all expected to experience intense heat at 37 degrees Celsius.
Health Risks and Official Advisories
In response to the escalating conditions, the IMD has issued critical health guidelines, strongly advising the public to avoid prolonged exposure to heat, particularly during the peak hours from 11 am to 3 pm. Concurrently, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has raised alarms over high UV radiation, reporting that the UV Index (UVI) has reached dangerous levels between 6 and 9 across various districts.
The IMD emphasized in an official statement: 'Such weather poses a serious health concern for vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, individuals with chronic diseases, and those exposed to the sun for extended periods or engaged in heavy labor. Heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps and heat rashes are highly probable during the peak daytime hours.'
Precautionary Measures and Safety Guidelines
To mitigate risks, authorities have disseminated comprehensive safety recommendations:
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing to enhance comfort and reduce heat absorption.
- Always cover the head with appropriate gear when venturing outdoors to protect against direct sunlight.
- Maintain hydration by drinking sufficient water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
- Ensure that children, elderly individuals, and people with pre-existing heart or kidney conditions remain in cool, shaded environments.
- Never leave anyone, especially vulnerable persons, inside parked vehicles, as temperatures can rise rapidly to life-threatening levels.
Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere strictly to these guidelines to safeguard against the adverse effects of the ongoing heatwave.
