Infant Dies After Vaccination in Meerut, Family Alleges Medical Negligence
A tragic incident unfolded in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where a three-month-old infant died in Daimpur village of the Kankerkhera area on Sunday morning. The death has triggered intense protests by family members, who are alleging severe medical negligence following a routine vaccination procedure.
Allegations of Improper Medication Administration
The child's family claims that the baby received a routine immunisation shot on Saturday. Subsequently, an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) administered a tablet instead of the prescribed oral medicine, which is typically given to prevent fever post-vaccination. The baby's father, Brajpal Singh, stated, "After vaccination, children are usually given oral medicine to prevent fever. However, the ANM gave a tablet, saying the syrup was out of stock." This deviation from standard protocol has raised serious concerns about the care provided.
Rapid Deterioration and Fatal Outcome
Family members reported that the infant struggled to consume the tablet and later developed a high fever during the night. Around 5 a.m. on Sunday, the baby allegedly began vomiting, and his condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite efforts, the infant passed away before medical assistance could arrive, leaving the family devastated and angry.
Protests and Police Intervention
Following the infant's death, enraged family members took to the streets in Daimpur village, blocking a road and raising slogans to demand justice. Police officials quickly reached the scene to pacify the protesters and manage the situation, ensuring order while acknowledging the family's grievances.
Official Response and Investigation Ordered
In response to the incident, Chief Medical Officer Ashok Katariya announced that a death audit has been ordered to investigate the circumstances. He told TOI, "WHO will find the cause of death and we will take appropriate action accordingly." This step aims to determine the exact cause of the infant's death and hold accountable any parties found negligent, providing a measure of transparency and accountability in this heartbreaking case.
