Bob's Burgers Star Eugene Mirman Updates on Car Crash Recovery

On March 31, 'Bob's Burgers' star Eugene Mirman experienced one of the most traffic-filled events of his life. The comedian and voice actor behind Gene Belcher was involved in a fiery car crash where his vehicle erupted in flames, leaving him with multiple serious injuries.

It has been over a month since the accident, and Eugene has provided a health update. The artist says that considering how dangerous the crash was, he is now 'back in life,' recovering and doing 'pretty good.'

Eugene Mirman Shares Health Update After His Car Crash

“I obviously went through an insane accident. For the first few days, people didn't know it was me! But I am doing really good,” the 51-year-old artist tells Variety. He adds that the pictures from the crash appear more horrifying than his actual condition. “I was injured, but not nearly as much as probably the images that were out there in the world potentially made it seem. So I'm doing not bad. I was just at the Lego store for ‘May the Fourth' with my son [Ollie], looking at Star Wars Legos. So I'm back in life.”

For context, Eugene Mirman's car crashed and erupted into flames on the Bedford Toll Plaza on New Hampshire's F.E. Everett Turnpike. Fortunately, he was rescued from the wreckage by a group of witnesses, including a state trooper. The accident left him with a concussion, broken ribs, and a broken wrist.

Explaining the severity of the situation, he calls it his “only near-death experience.” He believes he is very fortunate to have survived the tragic crash. “I remember certainly being in the ambulance and seeing a little bit of fire. I don't know exactly when it started,” he told Variety. “I know that obviously the vehicle was quite engulfed in flames, but I wasn't burned myself — which is obviously incredibly lucky.”

Eugene Mirman Is Not Ready to See Pictures from His Car Crash

The news of the fiery car crash sent shock waves. The pictures of the incident left everyone concerned. Mirman himself hasn't seen those photos and, as of now, isn't interested in them either. He says, “I'm not interested yet. I don't know if there'll be a time when I'm 78 and like, ‘Oh, you know what? I should really look up all those videos to see how truly traumatized I should be moving forward!'” He continues, “I'm sure they were terrifying. And I feel bad that everyone was put into an emotional place of being so concerned. Ultimately, I'm just so incredibly thankful to be OK.”

Eugene Mirman Says He Will Use His Tragedy for Comedy

“I will probably do stand-up about this. It would probably be odd not to mention it … I'm sure I'll talk about it and try to work out material. Ultimately, that's what comedians do. It is funny to be like, ‘I'll hopefully turn this near death experience into 15-20 great minutes!' Or four extraordinary minutes. We'll find out,” he adds, highlighting how he will churn out content from this insanely terrifying experience of his life.
