Kanpur experienced its hottest day of the current summer season on Monday, as scorching heat gripped the city. The mercury soared to 44.6 degrees Celsius at the Air Force observatory, while the CSA weather observatory recorded a maximum of 43.2 degrees Celsius, leaving residents struggling under extreme conditions.
Yellow Alert Issued by IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a yellow alert, warning of rising temperatures. The heat began intensifying from around 9 am and peaked during the noon hours. Strong sunshine coupled with dry winds made outdoor activities nearly unbearable. At approximately 2 pm, the heat index reached 46 to 47 degrees Celsius, creating hazardous conditions that forced citizens to stay indoors. Roads and market areas saw thin crowds as people avoided venturing out during the afternoon.
Extreme UV Index and Dry Weather
The maximum UV index was recorded between 10 and 12, falling into the "extreme" category. Experts warn that exposure to midday sunlight without protection can cause sunburn and skin damage. The maximum relative humidity stood at 39 percent, indicating dry conditions. North-westerly winds blowing at speeds of 6.2 to 14.3 kmph further intensified the heatwave-like feel, making the environment excessively hot.
Forecast: No Immediate Relief
According to the IMD weather forecast, dry weather with bright sunshine is expected to continue in Kanpur division on Tuesday. Daytime temperatures are likely to rise gradually throughout the week, with heatwave conditions possibly intensifying further. Dr S Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, stated that there is no immediate relief in sight. He strongly advised residents to avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm. "If there is an emergency, people must take all necessary precautions before stepping out," he added.
